Beetroot Fry with Poppy Seeds:

“Beetroot Fry” is a very common recipe all over the world, but frying with Poppy seeds is one of the most delicious dishes. Adding a spoon of sugar just before switching off the flame gives it a distinct flavour. 

This dish is very popular in West Bengal, India as well as in Bangladesh too. This is a very simple and healthy recipe, and it is one of the easiest beetroot recipes that can be made in minutes. This goes well with plain rice, roti, or chapatti.

Ingredients:

  • Beetroot: 500gm
  • Poppy Seeds: 1 tablespoon
  • Salt: To taste
  • Sugar: 1 teaspoon
  • Green Chili: 3 pieces
  • Vegetable Oil: 2 tablespoon

Preparation:

  • Peal the Beetroot, wash, and cut onto long thin strips (Julienne Cut).

Procedure:

  1. Heat oil in a deep-fry non-stick pan. Once hot add the green chilies and salt. 
  2. Sauté the chilies for a few seconds.
  3. Add the Beetroot and mix well. 
  4. Reduce flame, cover with a lid and cook for 3 to 4 minutes. In between stir frequently.
  5. Check whether Beetroot is boiled properly. If not boiled, sprinkle some water, cover, and cook for another 2 minutes.
  6. Keep aside the Beetroot.
  7. Heat oil on high flame. Add Poppy seeds and sauté the seeds for a few seconds.
  8. Reduce the flame, add the Beetroot and 1 teaspoon of sugar, and mix it gently.
  9. Once done, switch off the flame.
  10. Transfer it to the serving bowl.

Serve with: Plain Rice or Roti or Chapati.

Tips:

  • Fry the Beetroot on low flame to retain the nice red color. Frying on high flame Beetroot will turn to black. 
  • Fry Poppy seeds on high flame for better taste.
